Studies of reindeer pastoralism had long been isolated from the rest of pastoralist studies. This is explained by geographic and institutional factors as well as by effects of the iron curtain, which separated the Soviet Union/Russia, the home of most groups and peoples practicing reindeer pastoralism, from the rest of the world. This special issue aims to provide an interested reader with an overview of the variety of interactions reindeer pastoralists have with their various landscapes.
