Environmental Systems Research is calling for submissions to our Collection on Current trends and challenges of nature-based wastewater treatments.

In small communities, conventional wastewater treatments are not usually the best option. Many facilities have been closed because of their high economic cost and low adaptability to variable pollutant load and volume. This has paved the way for the implementation of alternative technologies such as trickling filters, bio-disks, or the more natural ponds and constructed wetlands. These systems have a higher footprint than that of conventional ones but are efficient and robust, and quite often more sustainable, from both the environmental and economic viewpoints.

During the last decades, the number of facilities built and studies on natural wastewater treatment systems has increased exponentially. This fact shows the great interest these systems have arisen in the scientific community, the public and the authorities.

Nevertheless, research on alternative systems has important challenges to face, including reducing their footprint, providing valuable by-products, adapting to climate change, improving their removal efficiency, particularly for new contaminants such as emerging pollutants, or reducing their economic cost and environmental impact.

The goal of this collection is to provide updated information on the current status of research and implementation of alternative wastewater treatments, as well as future challenges and developments.

José Alberto Herrera Melián: University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

José  PhD focused was on Chemical Speciation of Ni and Co in seawater. In 1995, he gained a position as a teacher of General Chemistry, Chemical Oceanography and Marine Pollution in the ULPGC. His research henceforth was focused on Wastewater Treatment with Advanced Oxidation Technologies (Fenton, photocatalysis), and natural treatments (ponds, constructed wetlands). Jose has published about 120 papers, book chapters, congress proceedings, posters and oral presentations. His h-index is 30 (Google Academic, Nov 2022). He has been the Director of the Sustainability Office of the ULPGC for 3 years (2017-19).

Dunia Esther Santiago García: University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain

Dunia studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Since then, she has participated in projects related to treatment and reuse of wastewater from different industrial processes. Her PhD (year 2015) dealt with the treatment and reuse of wastewater from the postharvest industry. Since 2016, she's worked as a lecturer in the Chemical Engineering field at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Dunia has also worked as a quality and environmental consultant in a private company between 2015 and 2021. She has published 19 articles and 2 books regarding wastewater remediation. Her h-index is 9 (Scopus, November 2022).
