This special issue presents papers from the International CAWSES-II Symposium (November 18-22, 2013 at Nagoya University, Japan). CAWSES-II (Climate And Weather of the Sun-Earth System II) is an international scientific program sponsored by SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics) that continued from 2009 to 2013. The program was established with the aim of significantly enhancing our understanding of the space environment and its impacts on life and society. This special issue covers the six major themes addressed by CAWSES-II.
