2018 has been a year of development and challenges in the field of energy.
The rapidly changing technologies of blockchains and cyber-secure operation have made power grid one of the vital cyber-physical systems. People are dedicated to continuously increase the efficiency of renewable and clean energy with the costs reduced. Along with the improvement of electrical equipment reliability, people’s unsafe behaviors and human errors have become one of the main sources of risks in power systems.
The Energy portfolio of SpringerOpen focuses on renewable energy and modern power systems. In 2018, several interesting collections on special topics have been published. We would like to thank every author, editor, and reviewer, for your hard work, and we look forward to working with you again in 2019!
2018 collections on special topics
Cyber-Physical Power Systems
To fully understand the interdependence and interplay of the cyber and physical systems, CPS should be studied as an integrated system. By studying the CPS, the mutual dependence of cyber and physical parts can be revealed, the risk due to the cyber-physical interaction can be reduced, and the methods for promoting the overall system efficiency can be derived. The Special Section on Cyber-Physical Power Systems edited by Ming NI, Dong LIU, Chanan SINGH is dedicated to reflecting the latest progress and key technologies in cyber-physical power systems (CPPS). The section includes a total of eleven papers which focus on the false data injection attacks, the general cyber security issue, the cascading failure, and the emerging new technologies in CPPS.
Forecasting in Modern Power Systems
Power systems have been evolving during the past century. The electric grid is getting more and more sophisticated due to modern technologies and business requirements, such as the implementation of smart grid technologies, deployment of ultra-high voltage transmission systems, and integration of ultra-high levels of renewable resources. All of these factors are challenging today’s energy forecasting practice. The special section of Forecasting in Modern Power Systems edited by Tao HONG and Wei-Jen LEE has been organized to answer the following question: How to better forecast the demand, supply and prices to accommodate the changes in modern power systems? The special section collects nine papers addressing various energy forecasting problems, including six on load forecasting, two on solar irradiance forecasting, and one on electricity price forecasting.
2017 International Conference on Coal Science and Technology
Coal, as one of the world’s most important fossil fuels, is in great need to investigate its utilization in order to improve efficiency and to reduce emissions. The International Conference on Coal Science and Technology (ICCS & T) aims to promote international communication and cooperation in the context of coal science, technology innovation and industrial development. The special issue of the 2017 International Conference on Coal Science and Technology has covered various aspects of energy science and engineering, particularly coal science and technology, bioenergy and biofuels, fuel cells, energy storage materials and related areas of interest.
