This special issue addresses the development of new, advanced, signal processing methods for studying the characteristics of highly non-stationary waveforms involved in the analysis, monitoring and management of electrical quantities at nodes of the Smart Grid. The features of the considered methods also determine the requirements of the communication infrastructures that can operate either locally, at the various system nodes that cooperate to take into account the interdependence of the electrical characteristics of each node, or in a centralized way, by collecting in a single node the information acquired at each node.
