Alpine Workshop Special Issue
The Alps are the best-studied orogen in the world, providing a rich geological record of the processes that operated during the closure of the Tethyan oceanic realm and the resulting collision of the African and European continents. Modern research in Alpine geology ranges from large international collaborations aimed at imaging the lithospheric and mantle structure below the orogen, to local field studies, which continue to provide important constraints for the orogen evolution and challenges for the established models. In recent decades, research is increasingly focusing on the connecting orogenic chains, such as the Carpathians and the Dinarides, to advance the understanding of the entire peri-Mediterranean orogenic system and the processes shaping the orogens in general.
Following the 15th Emile Argand Conference on Alpine Geological Studies (commonly known as the Alpine Workshop) held in Ljubljana in Sept 2022, we announce a thematic volume aiming to present contributions across a wide range of geological disciplines (tectonics and structural geology, petrology and geochemistry, geochronology, sedimentology and basin analysis, geophysics and geomorphology) to advance our knowledge of how the Alpine orogen evolved through time.
